Burette Set: Uses, Parts, 100 mL vs 150 mL & Buying Guide for Hospitals

A burette set is an IV set with a graduated chamber between the fluid bag and the patient line. The chamber holds a measured volume of fluid, which is why doctors, nurses and paediatric wards use it when they need tighter control over how much fluid is available to the patient.

If you are a hospital, clinic, nursing home or distributor, this guide covers what you need to order the right set the first time: uses, parts, 100 mL vs 150 mL, drop factor and a ready-to-use enquiry format.

Always specify chamber capacity, drop factor and venting separately. Never order by the words “burette set” alone.

What Is a Burette Set?

A burette infusion set (also called a burette IV set, IV burette set or measured-volume set) is a single-use IV administration set with a graduated chamber that holds a measured volume of infusion solution.

Single-use gravity burette sets are covered by ISO 8536-5, a separate standard from ordinary gravity IV sets (ISO 8536-4). A burette set is therefore not just another name for a standard IV set.

The chamber gives volume control. It does not decide the dose or infusion rate; those remain clinical decisions.

Burette Set Uses

Burette sets are used where clinicians want a defined volume of fluid within the line, commonly in:

  • Neonatal and paediatric care
  • Geriatric care
  • Controlled gravity infusions
  • Intermittent medication administration (in suitable systems)
  • Selected pump-compatible applications, where the set is specifically approved for the pump

Why Paediatric Wards Use Burette Sets

Children, especially neonates, need careful management of fluid volumes. A measured chamber lets staff work with a defined quantity instead of relying only on the large primary container. Many paediatric sets combine a burette with a 60 drops/mL microdrip.

This does not mean every child needs a burette set. The choice is made by the treating clinician and hospital protocol.

100 mL vs 150 mL Burette Set

Both capacities are sold by major manufacturers. For example, Romsons offers a 100 mL paediatric measured-volume set (Pedia Drip Plus, 60 drops/mL), while Baxter (Buretrol) and B. Braun (Dosifix) offer 150 mL sets.

Neither is universally better. The right capacity depends on your hospital’s approved protocol. Do not let a supplier swap 100 mL for 150 mL without clinical approval.

Is a Burette Set the Same as a Microdrip Set?

No. They are two separate specifications:

  • Burette = the measured-volume chamber
  • Microdrip = the drop factor (60 drops/mL)

Many burette sets are also 60 gtt/mL, but this must be confirmed for each product. When ordering, write: “Burette capacity: 150 mL; Drop factor: 60 gtt/mL.” Do not write only “micro burette set.”

Some burette sets are gravity-only, while others are designed for specific infusion pumps. Never assume pump compatibility; check the exact product.

Burette Set Bulk Buying Checklist

Before placing a hospital or distributor order, confirm:

  • Chamber capacity (100 mL / 150 mL)
  • Exact drop factor (gtt/mL)
  • Vented or non-vented spike
  • Tubing material and length (DEHP-free / PVC requirement, if any)
  • Filter requirement and micron rating
  • Float / auto shut-off valve, if required
  • Access ports and connector type
  • Gravity or pump use (and exact pump model)
  • Sterile, single-use, individually packed
  • Batch number, expiry and minimum remaining shelf life
  • Applicable standard and regulatory documents (CDSCO / Medical Devices Rules, 2017)
  • Pieces per pack and per case
  • Quantity, delivery city and schedule
  • Whether brand substitution is allowed

Sample Tender Specification

“Sterile single-use burette IV administration set; chamber [100/150 mL]; drop factor [60 gtt/mL]; [vented/non-vented]; tubing material and length as specified; fluid filter if required; access ports as required; compatible connector; gravity/pump use as applicable; individual sterile pack; regulatory and standards documents; batch traceability and minimum remaining shelf life.”

Compare quotations on technical specification first, documentation second and price last. A cheaper set may have a different capacity, connector, filter or material.
